Aunt Dimity & the Village Witch

This book was such a delightful read – it reminded me of why I loved reading mysteries!

I stumbled across Aunt Dimity after visiting my local library last Friday.  I walked in expecting to find a quiet corner to squeeze out a bit of writing on my new project, when the Aunt Dimity & the Village Witch cover shone like a beacon from the New Releases shelf in the center aisle.

Now anyone who knows me can tell you, I love anything to do with witches, so I made a beeline to the book’s inside cover to see what it was all about.  Imagine my surprise to discover that this is actually Nancy Atherton’s 17th book in an Aunt Dimity mystery series!

I tried to read the story from a writer’s perspective, but to Nancy’s credit, I kept getting hooked into the plight of her characters and the unfolding plot, that I forgot to think about things like point of view, chapter structure, and voice.  Not to give too much away…

The book is a paranormal mystery – in that Aunty Dimity happens to be dead.  The story unfolds against a charming setting in rural England with memorable characters, a bit of history, and the urgent need to solve a riddle which brings the whole town to the rescue of its newest resident.  I have to admit, a few of the more poignant moments in the story brought a smiling tear to my eye.
